So, you’re here. Maybe you’re a friend of mine, maybe you’re a friend of my better half. Maybe you found this site by accident, and just liked the colors. Or the logo. Maybe, hopefully, you enjoy drinking mead. Or making your own mead. Or maybe you want to get into that.
Whatever the case, WELCOME!
I’ll be your guide on this adventure as we go from small, single-gallon glass carboys to larger carboys, buckets, and even vats! We’ll discuss bees, honey, grains, hops, water, fruits (veggies?), spices, yeast, flowers, branding, naming, and anything else we can find to talk about.
I’m Jonathan Martin, and I’ve been making mead for over half a dozen years. I also enjoy beer, gaming, a good book, woodworking, art, writing, and am getting into beekeeping – more on that later.
I’m married and have four kids – two grown step-daughters as well as two younger boys who love to help, I’m sure you’ll see them pop-up in pictures at some point.
The ultimate goal here is to, down the road, open our own Meadery (quick fact: the term “mazer” actually refers to a cup or drinking vessel, not to someone who makes mead), and document our journey, eventually transitioning this site to the company’s website.
I started off making mead because I wanted to make alcohol of some kind, and with the schedule I had, beer was out of the question. Doing some research, I found that I could make some kind of wine with the time I did have. But I was not a traditional wine drinker, so what to do? Enter mead.
Made my first batch and I’ll be honest, it wasn’t very good. Tasted a bit like rocket fuel (universally, it seems that mead makers all describe this taste the same, like rocket, or jet fuel – there is no discussion up front. How we all know what rocket fuel tastes like? I don’t know). But I learned things, and I decided to try again, and again, and again. Now it’s rare that I don’t have at least three batches going and a couple dozen bottles aging or ready to drink.
So, sit back and enjoy our journey, and know that we have plans, lots of plans, and I can’t wait to share them with you as we move forward. Thanks for reading this far, and welcome along for the ride!
